The management of radioactive waste is made up of a series of technical and administrative activities. The latter vary depending on the type of facility at which the waste is to be found and the type of waste in question.
.- Authorised radioactive facility: such facilities have an operating permit issued by the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce or by the corresponding Council of the Autonomous Communities in the case of transfer to them of competence in such matters. This authorisation specifies the radioactive material that may be possessed.
.- Other facilities: any facility possessing radioactive material without the necessary authorisation.
.- Radioactive Lightning Rods: ENRESA removes radioactive lightning rods in response to a request from the owner. This simply requires a photograph showing the lightning rod as clearly as possible, which is attached to the application for removal.
.- Ion Smoke Detectors: the management of ion smoke detectors is regulated by Royal Decree 208/2005 on electrical and electronic devices and the management of their wastes.
